Abstract
The quality and manner of democratic practices in Nigeria have raised in recent times amongst scholars a question as to whether or not the type of democracy practiced in Nigeria is a blessing. Thisstudy, therefore, attempts to contribute an answer to this question. Conceptual clarifications of ‘democracy’ and ‘development’ are done within the conceptual framework of the study. The liberal and Marxist theories of democracy provided the theoretical framework of the study. The study carried out an appraisal of Nigerian democracy and the socio-political development of the Nigerian state and found that democracy has significantly impacted the socio-political development of Nigeria. It has brought about a transition from military rule, enhanced political participation, promoted human rights, and fostered ethnic and religious integration. Indeed, democracy is a blessing and not a curse for Nigeria.
