Abstract
Wholesome feed at reasonable cost is a major challenge to the poultry industry and the effects alternative feeds have on birds must be carefully examined before they are fully utilized.Broiler chicks of both sexes were fed formulated ration containing graded levels of Bacteria degraded cob product (BDCP) at different percentages (0, 18, 50 & 82) replacement of maize in broiler finisher diet.Bacteria fermentation has enhanced the protein level of the maize cob to values slightly lower than that of commercial feed. Birds fed diet 2 with 18% BDCP has the highest weight gain (1550g) compared with other chicks. The economic performance showed that the lowest cost per kilogram gained at x208.39 was obtained for D2 (18% BDCP) which was lower than x235.87 for D1 (control commercial feed). Others were x237.14 and x440.07 for D3 (50% BDCP) and D4 (82% BDCP) respectively. The blood protein was also significantly different in all the diet with the highest level found in D4 birds. The highest serum ALT (74) was found in diet 3 compared to the control birds with serum ALT of 64.It is concluded that up to 50% BDCP supplementation in broiler diet is cost effective and safe for broiler chick. The utilization of BDCP beyond 50% level in broiler finisher is not encouraging but the best result was obtained at 18% level of BDCP.
