POLLEN VIABILITY ENHANCEMENT STRATEGY AMONG THREE MAIZE GENOTYPES (Zea maysL.)

Abstract

The seed yield in maize could be affected by the time of the day when pollination is carried out and the conditions under which the pollens are exposed prior to pollination. Hand pollination experiment was conducted at Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti to investigate the pollen viability enhancement among three maize genotypes. The 3 x 4 x 2 factorized experiment consisted of three maize genotypes, four pollination times (09:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00 hours of the day)and two pollen storage conditions (ambient temperature and 00C). Data were taken on cob length (cm), cob girth (cm), cob weight (g), number of kernel rows, number of kernels per row, weight of 100 seeds (g) and weight of seeds per cob (g). Results indicated that the three genotypes were not significantly different (P< 0.05) in all the traits measured. Pollen stored under 00C produces significantly (P<0.05) higher value for all the traits except cob length. Furthermore, all the traits measured were significantly affected by the time of pollination, pollination done at 09:00 hour consistently had the highest value except cob length. Conversely, those done at 18:00 hour resulted in reduction in cob weight and weight of seeds per cob by 96 and 168% respectively compared with those pollinated at 09:00 hours. These results suggested that pollen can remain viable under 00C condition for 09:00 hours period under conditions prevailing in Ekiti State, Southwestern Nigeria. Storing pollen under 0 0C is necessary and storing under ambient condition should be avoided to give superior yield trial.
